Table Saw Sled
A HOME MADE TABLE SAW SLED
Table saw sleds are mostly used for cross cutting. Sleds have a base made of a base and a fence. The base is preferably made of birch plywood while the fence is a two by four piece of lumber. You can buy a piece of steel from the supermarket and use it as the bar. The metal bar should slide into the T-slot. This bar is vital since it fortifies the sled and improves precision.
If you want to make your own table saw sled, you can do it with ease. Below are some instructions. It is important to note that most of the measurements are in centimeters unless stated otherwise.
Cold steel used as the bar usually comes in a standard manner. Most supermarkets stock those with width of three-quarters of an inch. Although it is better than a miter gauge, it still has room left. You can widen the bar by striking it in between two hammers. The top hammer will be used for striking while the one below will cushion the blow. If your bar ends up bended, you can use the same technique to straighten it.
After widening the bar, it is advisable for someone to file the edges to remove some bumps and it also gives the bar the ability to slide into the T-slot. It might take a few attempts but eventually your bar will be usable.
Attach the bar to the base that you have purchased for the job. It is important to use a big number of plywood for the job. You can use a screw to bind the plywood together. Create a rabbet joint into the fence. This should be at the rear side of the sled. The fence should be three inches in length. Always make sure you use wood with a firm grain pattern. This will be effective in the reduction of warping during climate changes.
When assembling the sledge attach the plywood in a way that its last millimeter strikes the blade. After that is done, remove the sledge with a saw. Attach the fence at a ninety degrees angle. You can use a big framing square to measure the angle.
You can then varnish the sled and the extensions with floor vanish. Despite it being costly, it is hard and glides easily. This is an attribute that is needed. You now have table saw sledge. It is not stylish in design but it will function well.
